Here at Clockpunk Studios, we primarily build our websites using custom-designed templates on the WordPress platform. So the question is bound to come up from time to time: Why use WordPress, when there are so many other content management systems available to authors, publishers, and web designers when it comes to building websites?
At Clockpunk Studios, we love WordPress, and we’re obviously not alone. At this point, WordPress powers more than 25% of the entire Internet. But just because lots of people are using it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best, so here are a few of the reasons that we love WordPress, and think that it’s the best solution for most author websites and other sites that we build:
- WordPress is easy to use. Yeah, there’s a learning curve when it comes to picking up any new interface or platform, and WordPress certainly has some back-end features that are more complicated than others, but when it comes to the day-to-day work of updating your blog, adding photos, that kind of thing, WordPress is pretty intuitive and offers a nice, clean interface. Plus, if you hire us to build your website, we give you a hands-on training course in all the features before the site ever goes live, so that you can handle all the ins and outs with ease. Want more support for the more complex back-end features, or in case something goes wrong? We also offer ongoing WordPress support and maintenance that keep your plug-ins up to date and help keep everything running smoothly.
- WordPress gives you more control. One of the reasons that we use WordPress here at Clockpunk Studios is because its powerful, flexible platform allows us to create highly customized templates to fit the needs of all of our clients, whether they’re authors, publishers, magazines, or just about any other business. These custom themes allow us to control more than just what your website looks like, they can also control how it works, making sure that your website supports your needs and those of your readers and customers.
- WordPress gives you more ownership. WordPress is an open source software, and whenever you have Clockpunk Studios build you a website on a WordPress platform, all the underlying files will be hosted on an account or server that you control. That means that the platform can’t change or disappear overnight. You’ll always have control over your website; not just the content of it, but the underlying files that make it up and make it work. That’s not always true when using other platforms.
Ultimately, there are lots of different ways to make great websites out there in the world–as many as there are great web designers. Here at Clockpunk Studios, we feel like WordPress is the best and most versatile approach for most situations, but at the end of the day, we take whatever approach is best for each of our clients. When you contract with us to build an author website–or any other kind of site–we’ll start with a consultation to determine what you’re looking for and how we can best meet your needs, and then go from there!
